Olya and Andriy have been together exactly a month. That evening Andriy texts a friend: “Do I get something? Or is that silly?” The friend answers with a question: “Did she get you something?” Nobody knows the rules, so this date is easy to get wrong in both directions: arriving empty-handed, or with a bouquet that makes you both cringe.
There are rules, though. They just change as the relationship does. An anniversary gift ages along with the relationship, and the scale shifts: first it is about size, then about accuracy. In month one the goal is not to scare anyone. Later the goal is for the person to feel heard. Let’s walk that road, from a month to five years and beyond, stopping at each date. It is about the age of the relationship, not of the people: “relationship anniversary” or “anniversary of a relationship”, people search it both ways and it feels the same either way.
One month: nothing scary to open
Scale is everything here. A big box says “I have already decided”, and you are still getting to know each other. Jewellery or a gadget at one month scares people for exactly that reason, and it also puts them in a spot: answer in kind, or stay awkwardly quiet.
So Andriy doesn’t buy, he returns. On the first date Olya had a mint lemonade, and now on a walk he takes the same one out of a flask. It costs almost nothing, yet there is a whole sentence inside the gesture: “I was listening.” You can answer it with a smile, and that is its strength.
The month’s trap: a lovely gesture that demands a reply. If the person can’t do the same thing back without awkwardness, the gift is too big.
Six months: a ticket for “someday”
Six months is no longer new, but not yet a habit. You have said plenty of small things to each other by now, and a gift can quote them.
Oh, I adore this band. I’d love to go to a concert, but the tickets vanish in a day
Yeah, I see
Six months in, two tickets lie on Olya’s bedside table. Not a surprise for a hundred people and not a whole weekend: just “you mentioned it, and I remembered”. A small budget, but with an exact address. The same works for a small trip to a place you both said “someday” about: bought in advance, “someday” becomes “on Saturday”.
The six-month trap: a grand surprise. Big gestures this early set a bar you will have to keep meeting.
A year: a map of the first date
Here expensive things barely work, but memory of a place does. Olya once tossed out, “Remember, there was a bench by the water?” Andriy finds that bench on an online map and picks a scale where the streets around are visible, but not the whole city. He saves the screenshot at the highest resolution, prints it on thick matte paper so the frame doesn’t glare, and writes the date of that evening in the corner. What remains is a small heart or circle where the bench is, and a frame. A small budget, yet what hangs on the wall is an evening, not a box.
If the first date was online or the café closed long ago, take the place where you first walked together. The map works as long as the point on it is real.
A short card goes with the gift, because without it the map can pass for decor. Here is a text that fits anyone:
We once talked about [what exactly]. This comes from there. Happy anniversary to us.
The year’s trap: repeating a birthday gift. An anniversary is about the two of you, not about things, and the same perfume with a different ribbon won’t save it.
If the date has already passed, there is a separate story: what to do when you forgot.
Two years: the experience they kept postponing
In two years you have lived through several holidays and know well what the person doesn’t buy for themselves. So give not “the best” but “their own”: a day they have wanted for a long time and kept putting off.
Where to look for their “someday”? In a year of chat: “someday I’d like to”, “it would be cool”, “too bad we didn’t make it”. In whatever they gave up because of money or time. It might be a pottery workshop, a weekend in another city, a show they couldn’t get tickets for last year. Andriy doesn’t invent what looks nice. He takes one of Olya’s words from his notes and turns it into a booked day.
If the person answers a direct question with “I don’t need anything”, don’t worry: how to hear what you need between the lines is in the piece on “I don’t need anything”.
The two-year trap: “like last year, only bigger”. You can’t win a contest with your own past for long: every next time has to beat it.
Five years and beyond: an evening of details
At this age price doesn’t matter at all, complexity of assembly does. Someone who has known you for five years can’t be surprised by an object, but can be surprised by an evening you build from their own small things.
Olya and Andriy have been together five years. He lists ten things that belong only to them: a place, a song, a phrase, a joke, a first trip. He picks five and puts them in order so the evening has a start and an end. Dinner where they first sat at one table. The song that was playing then. A phrase Olya once said aloud and Andriy wrote down. A photo from the first trip. And a half-page letter about what has changed in five years. Each detail is simple, together they make a story about two people.
The only thing to watch is the small stuff: booking, time, transport and a plan B in case of rain.
The five-year trap: something practical dressed up as romance. A vacuum cleaner or an iron can be a great purchase, but not an anniversary gift.
What all the stages share
Everything that works from six months on rests on one thing: you know what the person said. Not guess, know. For that, write it down the same minute, while they are still in the room:
I want the same perfume Kate has
Noted
Eight months later that note decides whether it is “safe and neutral” or “you remembered?”. To keep the date itself from slipping, use the free date reminders tool: your calendar will remind you two weeks before, three days before and on the day, and we never receive your dates.
Duomni, an app for couples, is still getting ready to launch. It will save your loved one’s wishes and dates and remind you two weeks before an occasion with a selection of gifts, and only you will see the surprise.
