“Honestly, I don’t need anything.”

Olya says it so sincerely that you almost believe her. Her birthday is three weeks away. Andriy is standing in the middle of the kitchen and can already see what comes next: he will rack his brain, she will fake delight, and yet another candle will join a collection nobody asked for.

Here is the good news: “I don’t need anything” almost never means “I need nothing”. It means “don’t ask me directly”. People feel awkward naming what they want out loud. They don’t want you to spend money, they don’t want to seem demanding, or they honestly have no answer when someone puts them on the spot. Yet all year long, the same people tell you what they are missing, with no pressure at all. Between a coffee and the commute, between two lines about something else, as if it didn’t matter.

So a good gift takes less imagination than hearing.

Forty seconds in March

Here is how it looks in real life. March, the kitchen. Olya has just come back from a friend’s place.

March, the kitchen
Olya

Kate let me smell her perfume. I want the same one as Kate’s

Andriy

Yeah, nice

Olya

Well, I’ll buy it someday. Though honestly I don’t need anything

A one-minute conversation that both will forget by evening, unless someone writes it down. Then eight months later, on Sunday 29 November, Olya unwraps a box and says the thing the whole exercise is for: “You remembered?” And if nobody wrote it down, she gets a mall gift card. Also a gift, just with a different reputation.

Below are five kinds of phrases where a person has already said what they want, and what each one turns into in a shop.

A complaint that is really an order

“It died again.” “I can never find a charger.” “How long can this go on.”

A complaint about a small daily annoyance is the most honest kind there is. The person is not asking for anything, they are just tired. And they won’t buy the fix for themselves, because it’s “not worth the money”. So someone else can. You, for example.

Andriy

It died again and I’m only halfway

Olya

Because you don’t carry a power bank

Andriy

Because it’s a shame: the good ones are expensive and the cheap ones die

Andriy gave away the key part himself: the cheap ones die. So a no-name power bank for pennies is out: he has already paid for that lesson. A proper one, say an Anker at 20,000 mAh and 22.5 W, runs from 1,489 to 1,499 ₴ from different sellers on Prom. This kind of small thing becomes the best one exactly when it rescues you.

“I want the same perfume as Kate’s”

It sounds like a wish said aloud and gets heard as politeness. In fact it’s the most precise instruction you could ask for: there is a name, an owner of the example, and even the place where you can smell it.

What to do? Ask Kate what the perfume is. Kate will be pleased, because who doesn’t like being the benchmark, and Olya will learn nothing. In our story it’s Narciso Rodriguez For Her, 50 ml. Depending on the scent, on Prom it runs from 2,499 ₴ (Intense) to 3,550 ₴ (Pure Musc), which is why you must first find out which one Kate wears.

And one rule with no exceptions: nothing “similar”. A perfume that is “roughly the same” does not exist. It is simply another perfume that she never dreamed of wearing. A tester without a box and an “original at half the price” don’t count either.

Admiring somebody else’s thing

“What a cool camera.” “Oh, they have such a nice sweater.” The person was charmed and moved on. It’s easy to go wrong here: admiration is not a wish. Listen for whether she comes back to it a second time. Once may be politeness, twice is already a plan.

Olya

Look, their photos print right after the shot. So cute

Andriy

Instant print?

Olya

Yeah. We could get one someday, but it would just sit in a drawer

She didn’t just admire it, she added “we could get one someday” herself. That’s the signal: Fujifilm Instax Mini 12. On Prom the camera without accessories runs from 4,126 to 5,849 ₴ depending on the colour. You will need film cartridges: twenty shots start at 1,090 ₴. A bundle with a case, an album and fifty sheets of film for 9,899 ₴ isn’t worth your attention: you can put a camera and film together yourself, cheaper, and Olya hasn’t asked for an album.

The word “someday”

“Someday I’d like to learn.” “Someday I’d like to try proper matcha, not the sachet kind.”

Everything is hidden inside the word “someday”: I want it, but not now and not for myself. It’s a wish a person has put in the drawer marked “later”. Your job is to shorten “later” to “tonight”.

A ceramic matcha bowl with a spout from a particular seller on Prom costs 1,116 ₴ (it was 1,200). Look in the listing for the whisk and the spoon: they are not always included. And please don’t buy an expensive portion of the matcha itself without the bowl: first the tool, then whatever you pour into it.

“I’ve wanted it for ages, but it’s a waste of money”

The most precise phrase of all. The person admits the thing is useful and then talks themselves out of it. It makes a perfect gift: something they will never buy for themselves and you can buy without a guilty conscience.

Sunday, the bathroom
Andriy

This brush is completely worn out. I’ve wanted a proper electric one for ages, but it’s a waste of money

Olya

Three thousand on a toothbrush? Yeah, fair

Three thousand on a toothbrush, indeed. The Oral-B iO 3 from the cheapest sellers on Prom costs 3,799 ₴ (pink) and 3,899 ₴ (black). Elsewhere, in gift versions and bundles, it is 4,499–6,299 ₴. Don’t buy a pricier model “just in case”: the person talked about an ordinary electric toothbrush, not a top one with modes for everything under the sun.

How to listen so you don’t forget

The hardest part of all five phrases is not hearing them but keeping them in your head. A month later “Olya said something about perfume” turns into “Olya said something”.

So write it down the same minute, while the person is still in the room: one sentence, in their own words, with the date and the place (“March, after Kate’s”). Not “something like that”, but the name, the colour, the size. And when a second mention of the same thing lands next to the first, you know it’s not a mood but a real wish. Plain notes on your phone are enough. If you want something more convenient, collect them in the free wishlist.

And when someone says “I don’t need anything” right now, don’t argue and don’t ask “are you sure?”. Ask about the past, not about a gift. What annoyed you most at home this past month? What would you do with a free day if money didn’t matter? It sounds nothing like preparation, and the answers go into the same notes.

And one ban: a gift certificate “so the person can choose”. People on forums complain that certificates expire before they get round to using them. That kind of gift turns into a task with a deadline.

What would have happened in our story

Andriy wrote down the perfume phrase back in March, next to four others he heard over the year. On Sunday 15 November there are two weeks left before the birthday: enough to order, wait for delivery and not run anywhere. On Monday the 16th he buys it. And on the 29th, a Sunday, Olya unwraps the box and says: “You remembered?”

Without a note, nobody would reconstruct that phrase. All that would be left is “I don’t need anything” and a gift card.

That is what we are building Duomni for. It is still getting ready to launch, but the idea is simple: to save a loved one’s wishes and dates and, two weeks before an occasion, remind you with a selection of gifts. Only the person who wrote it down will see the surprise.
