A week after coming home from the hospital. Three identical baby blankets on the dresser, four bunny throws, and not a single pack of diapers. Olya and Andriy look at the pile and laugh, because there is nothing else left to do.
We told everyone: anything, as long as it’s from the heart
Well, it was. Three times
Next time we make a list. With reservations
The funny part is that nobody got it wrong. When a baby arrives, people want to help so badly that they forget to ask how. And asking you feels awkward: you are tired, you just said “anything”, and you are unlikely to have changed your mind. So guests go to a shop and buy whatever looks good in the hands: a blanket, a toy, one more newborn outfit. Not because they don’t care. Nobody gave them a hint.
You can give the hint yourselves. And the good news is that there are four moments for it, not one.
While it’s still the two of you
Before the birth, the closest people ask: your mother, your sister, the friend who has done this already. “How can I help?” is sincere, and it deserves a sincere answer. Not “we don’t need anything”, but the truth: a pack of diapers, swaddle cloths, and a dinner someone leaves at the door on Tuesday, when you no longer know what day of the week it is.
The best items on this list don’t come in boxes at all. An hour of quiet while you sleep. Some cleaning. A walk with the stroller. Writing that down feels awkward, but guests are exactly the ones who will be glad: at last someone told them what to do instead of making them guess.
A car seat, pacifiers and hygiene products are better chosen by you, following the manufacturer’s instructions and your doctor’s advice. This is where somebody else’s “nice idea” won’t help. Put such things on the list only once you have picked the exact model and want exactly that.
The week after coming home
After you come home, people arrive with flowers and toys, and that’s lovely. But the real need is usually different: someone to bring cooked food, leave a bag of groceries, or sit with the baby while you take your first shower in three days.
Put it on the list outright, in one line: “dinner on Saturday, nothing spicy”. That item can be reserved too. And a guest who wanted to “buy something nice” suddenly gets to give something that is truly nice: to you.
You can skip newborn-size clothes. They are worn briefly, and you usually have enough already.
A christening without the nerves
There is a tradition here, and it helps more than it gets in the way: guests know what to give. Ukrainian gift guides for christenings name a cross, an icon, a silver or gold engraved spoon and a kryzhma, the cloth the baby is wrapped in. Who brings what depends on the family and the region. Often the godparents take the cross and the kryzhma, but in some families it’s all different.
So before you write the list, call the older relatives. A grandmother may already have an icon in the wardrobe that she promised the grandchild long before he was born, and it’s better to know in advance. Agree who gives what by custom, and only then add the rest: books, toys for the age, something for the home. Reservations save you from two identical icons here, and that happens more often than you would think.
Chipping in works like this: in our wishlist one guest reserves one gift, so guests agree among themselves, in their own chat, how to split something big. One writes “I’ll take half”, another “I’ll take the other half”. You don’t need to step in.
When the baby is one
The first year is long, and a list “for the year” goes stale fast. What you needed at three months is on a shelf by nine. So don’t write it all at once: let the first months be about food, cleaning and sleep, the middle of the year about walks and play, and the weeks near the first birthday about books and toys for the age.
Write a specific size, not “to grow into”. Children grow unevenly, and “to grow into” often means a wardrobe full of things that are already out of season.
What stays off the list
The list has no use for your child’s name, photos, birth date or documents. Anyone with the link can see the list, its title and the event date, and links have a habit of travelling further than you planned. So call it simply “Christening”, not by the name, and put nothing personal in comments or item captions. Gifts don’t need any of it: an item name, a product link and a size are enough. And send the link to people you know, not to a building or neighbourhood group chat.
A letter that offends nobody
The hardest part of all this is saying out loud: “here is what we need”. It feels tactless. In fact guests breathe a sigh of relief. Here is a letter you can copy and adjust.
Hello! You asked how you could help, so we made a list. It has small things and bigger ones, and items without boxes too: a dinner, a walk with the stroller, an hour of quiet. Please mark what you take, so we do not end up with five identical blankets. If you want to give something of your own, just tell us, that is great too. You do not have to buy anything: having you around is what matters most to us. Thank you!
The list is easy to make in Duomni’s free wishlist: no sign-up, one link for everyone, and “Christening” is one of the occasion types. A guest presses “Reserve”, and you never see who picked what. The list deletes itself 7 days after the event.
Three blankets
Olya later passed one of those three blankets to a neighbour whose baby had just been born. The second stayed for the stroller, the third went to the crib. So not one was wasted. It’s just that next time, the first line of the list was a dinner.
Duomni, an app for couples, is still getting ready to launch. It will record your partner’s wishes and important dates and remind you two weeks before an occasion with a selection of gifts, and only the author will see the surprise.
